Happy Giving Tuesday! On the one hand it makes sense and on the other its a bit strange that, after a long weekend of consumption - Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday - society collectively takes a break and uses this day to think about giving. But, as the saying goes, it’s better late than never.
At Elemental, a commitment to giving has been at our core since our company’s inception and we thought we’d use this occasion to codify a bit further our vision for giving back. In a world where corporations are so often seen as being a drain on the environment and society, we wanted to create a company that would be part of the solution to the problems that face our world.
Our mission is to promote recycling and the use of recycled materials. As so, we think of our core job and the production of our sustainable toilet paper as a form of giving back to the planet. The more we can sell sustainably produced goods, the fewer non-sustainably produced goods will be produced and thus the more natural resources will be preserved.
But, we’ve always planned to go further and give a percentage of our profits back to like-minded causes striving to make the world a better and more sustainable place to live. Recycling is a means to an end for us and the end is more land protected in a natural state where biodiversity can thrive and mankind can reconnect with our natural environment.
So, today we are proud to announce that we will donate 50% of all profits we earn as a company to non-profit efforts. Specifically, our giving will focus in 2 areas:
- Teaching kids about sustainable living and recycling - it's cliche but true, children are our future. We care deeply about recycling because we are confident it is one of the simplest things we can do to help the planet. We think there is disproportionate bang for the buck when we invest in teaching kids about recycling. If we can get them started with sustainable lifestyles early, they will maintain these practices throughout their life and they may even influence some grow-ups along the way.
- Preserving land - we think there is no more straightforward way to help the planet than setting aside an increasingly large area of land in a natural state. Progress in sustainable land, river and forest management are valiant efforts but there is simply no substitute for the biodiversity and environmental robustness of land left in a natural state. There are great organizations across the country and globe striving to do just this as we are excited to help them in any way we can.
Along with this commitment, in the spirit of Giving Tuesday, we are proud to announce our first two donations:
- $500 to Urban Green Lab - this homegrown non-profit leads the sustainable education charge in our hometown of Nashville. Innovative and with a dedicated staff, they developed the first mobile green lab classroom in the city that brings sustainability curriculum ranging from compost to energy conservancy to area middle and high schools. Additionally, they support Sustainable Classrooms which is an initiative to train local teachers through professional development courses on how to create and maintain STEAM-standard sustainable programming in their own classrooms. Since recycling education is ‘elemental’ to our brand, we hope we are reflecting their good example in all we do.
- $500 to the American Prairie Reserve - this amazing organization is committed to creating the largest nature reserve in the continental United States. So far, they have pieced together almost 400,000 acres in central Montana. Among their many goals, they aspire to create an environment where American Bison can roam free and thrive. The audacity of this goal inspired us to start Elemental and is one of the reasons we use a buffalo as our logo.
Happy Giving Tuesday to you and thank you for your continued support of our company, Steve Poleskey - founder
